An individual who becomes a parent, including through adoption, may be entitled to Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP), Statutory Paternity Pay (SPP) or Statutory Adoption Pay (SAP). The flat rates for SMP, SPP and SAP increased to £123.06 per week (or 90% of average weekly earnings if less) – from 5 April 2009.
To qualify for any of these payments, an individual must be an employed earner, ie someone working for an employer who is able to pay secondary Class 1 National Insurance contributions (NICs) on their wages or salary.
